History


  • Between 1950-1974 there were only 650 recorded Vietnamese immigrants.  After the fall of Saigon, 125,000 were recorded.
  • The first wave of immigrants came because they were affiliated with Americans and were highly skilled and highly educated.
  • The first wave of immigrants were transferred to refugee centers one of which was Camp Pendleton.
  • In 1977 the 2nd wave of immigrants started arriving to the United States. This wave continued until the mid 1980s.

California officially recognizes the pre-communist flag of Saigon as the United States government recognizes the current flag of Saigon.

Demographics


  • San Jose Vietnamese population: 100,486 (2010); 8.8% of the city's total population.



  • San Jose has the largest Vietnamese population in the country.



  • More than 5,000 businesses are owned by Vietnamese Americans.



  • In Santa Clara county there are 60,657 ELL and 6,791 are Vietnamese



  • There is an active community in San Jose around the Chua Duc Vien temple.



  • 1 in 10 Vietnamese families lived in poverty in 2007 to 2009 in Santa Clara county.



  • 1 in 3 Vietnamese households (36%) were linguistically isolated (no member ages 14 or older spoke only English)
