(Bahn nam) We went out to Hue Vietnamese restaurant in San Jose. She ordered all of her favorites for us. This dish is ground shrimp in rice batter steamed in a banana leaf.
(Banh Beo) All of the dishes she ordered are specific to the region that she comes from in Vietnam. The dish pictured above would be considered an appetizer with the same steamed rice batter filled with ground pork. You spoon the fish sauce onto it and eat. Everything seemed to include fish sauce!
(Bahn xeo) The soup in the top of the photo above takes a day to simmer. Paige told me when her mom makes that soup she starts it at 8am and they won't eat it until 7 or 8pm. It had more flavor than the infamous pho. There was tofu, a spicy broth, rice noodles, and bean sprouts.
Afterwards we went to a Vietnamese dessert drink shop. I was thrilled because I am obsessed with boboa tea and this was so much better! The drinks start with tapioca jellies, lychee, coconut, and different fruits depending on what you order and is topped off with shaved ice. A creamy, sugary liquid is poured over the top. We stirred up our drinks and enjoyed!

http://www.bennguyen.org/ The two pictures above are not Paige's photos. She we found these photographs together and she says she believes this is very similar to what her family experienced. |
I enjoyed the evening sampling Paige's comfort foods! It was fascinating to hear the story about her family's journey to the United States.
